About freesias

Freesias are amongst some of the loveliest spring flowers which are fragant and last well as a cut flower.

Freesias belong to the Iris family and have a long wiry stem bearing several flowers on  a one sided arching spike. They come in colours of white, cream or pink ,sometimes flushed with purple and yellow and are very fragrant.

The  hybrid species that most of  mine are, include colours of cyclamen, purple, orange, and pink and grow on long stems. These varieties are not  quite as fragrant as the originals but are more popular and look spectacular in a vase

Crop supports are needed for flowering as they have a habit of falling over and also it makes it easier for cutting. I use two layers of support, one about 15cm off the soil to give support as they start growing and the other about 60cm  up then i can cut the flowers easily and also it gives easier access to take out any dead plant material

By staggering the plantings you will have a longer growing season and especially if you are supplying the commercial market this is a necessity

A little About me.

Hi

My name is Brenda and I live in a small rural community in the central north island in New Zealand.

I have been self employed most of my working life and most days you can either find me in the greenhouse where I grow Freesias for the local florists or in my sewing room which is my other business.

I have been looking for something that was different, diverse, kept me in contact with other people but I could still work from home.
I joined forces with a remarkable group of people who provide the trainings and tools so that we can promote any businees we choose.

I now have the confidence to pass on some of this knowledge to help others become successful

Maintenance in Greenhouse

After lifting the bulbs and replanting there is a lot of cleaning and maintenance to be done.

All equipment needs to be wiped down, disinfected where necessary and repaired ready for the next growing season

I run a cleaner disinfectant through the water drippers and unblock any that need it and make sure they are thoroughly clean.

The holding tank for my water is scrubbed out and refilled again and the cf  and ph probes are scrubbed and calibrated

The netting to hold my plants upright are repaired as its easy to cut through it when in the height of flower picking as the leaf material is so dense.

The greenhouse floor has a layer of weedmatting over it so I can sweep this and then i will use a hose to wash it all down.

This takes me about a month to get it all done

Lifting the bulbs

December is a busy time as the plants have now died down

and the bulbs now need to be lifted and divided.

All dead plant debri needs to be removed .

My freesia are in trays so each tray is tipped

up and all plant material taken out and separated

into bulbs for sale, replanting material and the rest

is disposed of

I reuse my growing media so once it has all plant material

removed from it the tray is refilled then placed back on the

growing bed

I store the lifted bulbs in a cool dry place until they are

sold or replanted
